“A mistake is just the beginning of a creative idea”
This motto pretty much sums up my creative process. Jumping in and not worrying about the results is a great way to expand one’s imagination. It also leads to having a lot of unfinished projects lying around the house waiting for inspiration. Looking back, I was always creating things, but I never thought of myself as an artist, therefore the journey to becoming an artist was full of detours and side trips. Growing up in Iowa as a farmer’s daughter was ideal, but I was sure there was more to the world, so I interrupted my college education to travel across the western states. Along the way, I fell in love, got married and had four kids. We settled in California, moved to Pennsylvania, back to California and in 1997 settled in Ithaca, NY and decided to stay put for awhile. I finished school at Syracuse University with a bachelor in fine art with a concentration in painting. Stained glass was a hobby I had picked up many years ago, but I kept coming back to it over and over. Selling the first piece “validated” me as an official artist and thus began a career. I’ve been represented by different galleries and in 2007, a fellow artist, Anne Steinle joined me in opening our own shop, Belle Melange, “A beautiful mixture of artistic furnishings for the home”. It’s been an exciting and fun adventure. |
